At the regional level, the IPOPNG is actively involved in the discussions with other members of the Pacific Island Forum to establish a regional framework to address IPR issues concerning the region.

These discussions are facilitated by the Forum Secretariat in cooperation with WIPO and IP Australia. As part of a regional framework, the member countries have agreed to establish a Regional Trade Mark System and endorsed "in principle" for IPOPNG to be the body responsible in administering this regional system. This decision was made in light of PNG's current capacity and experience in trade marks administration. A formal decision will be made during the Pacific Trade Ministers meeting in Cook Islands in July 2008.
